John appears on stage amongst the rubbish in a ragged coat and hat swigging from a bottle. He berates the audience for despising and pitying him and says that any one of them could end up in the same position as him. Then, taking off his rags, he reveals his dress suit underneath and the action moves on in a series of flashbacks to illustrate how he fell from being a company director to living in a cardboard box. We are shown his unhappy marriage, his romantic affair, his fall from favor at work, the breakup of his family relationships all linked by a comic narrative. The play ends with a twist as he replaces his ragged clothes.
