Professor Neyland, the eminent archaeologist, arrives at the Church Hall in Steeple Aston to investigate a “find” of Roman coins made by Lamplew Baines, the local sexton. Unfortunately, when the volunteer diggers begin to assemble it appears that they have very little idea about archaeology. Why are they here? What can they achieve? It would seem that they all have their reasons.
